Pine

Pinus spp. (Southern Yellow Pine group: Pinus taeda, P. palustris, P. echinata, P. elliottii; also P. strobus) · Pinaceae

Southern Yellow Pine built the South: hard, dense, with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and old-growth longleaf is the heart pine of reclaimed floors and beams. It is a group of species, not one, which is why the row has no single Janka.

Origin
Southeastern United States (yellow pines); eastern North America (Eastern White Pine)

About Pine

Pine at OCC means the Southern Yellow Pine group, loblolly, longleaf, shortleaf and slash, plus the softer Eastern White Pine. The yellow pines share reddish brown heartwood, yellowish white sapwood, straight grain and a fine to medium texture. Hardness runs a wide range across the group, which is why the spec table names the species rather than one number. Resin can gum tools and clog sandpaper, so we kiln dry to set the pitch and keep fresh paper on the sander. All of them glue and finish well. Heartwood is only moderate to low in decay resistance; keep it indoors. It suits farm tables, benches, shelving and workbenches. Ours is milled and kiln dried in Zebulon, NC.

Working & finishing

The yellow pines work fairly well with most tools, but resin gums up tools and clogs sandpaper, so the shop keeps fresh paper on the sander and wipes with mineral spirits before finish. All five species glue and finish well; Eastern White Pine is easy to work with hand and machine tools. Pine blotches under stain, so a clear oil or hardwax on kiln-dried stock is what OCC recommends, and a film finish suits a workbench or farm table. Working pine has been reported to cause skin reactions and asthma-like symptoms in sensitive people.

Care

Wipe spills and clean with a damp cloth. Hardness depends on the species: the yellow pines at 690 to 870 lbf are a serviceable soft-to-medium top, Eastern White Pine at 380 lbf dents from a fingernail. Heartwood is only moderate to low in decay resistance and sapwood has none, so pine stays indoors. Expect moderate seasonal movement.
